Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque Review

I am always on the lookout for new masks to start using.  I believe you need several different types of masks to accommodate your different skin care needs. A lot of times your skin is constantly changing, especially with the seasons and different environments. So that means finding the right skin care routine for every time your skin evolves.

Right now my skin has kind of been all over the place. I had a baby 4 months ago so my skin has been breaking out a lot due to hormone fluctuation, and not to mention super oily from this summer heat. Since I’m breast feeding I have had to be super careful what I put on my skin, and one thing that I found that has helped me out a lot these past few months has been masks.

The masque I’m really into right now is Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque made with Amazonian White Clay.

kiehl's clay masque, kiehl's deep pore cleansing masque, skin care, mask

It goes on super smooth and dries fairly quick so it’s not one that you have to leave on for like 10 minutes, which is awesome for me because I don’t have a ton of time to dedicate right now. I have only used it a few times so far. I discovered it in a Birchbox I got several months ago and it’s a tester size. One thing I can say is that a little bit goes a long way, so I think I can get at least 2 more uses out of it. Normal retail price is $16 for a 1 oz jar, and $30 for 5 oz. I assume that could last several months, especially if you’re only using it once or twice a week.

kiehl's clay masque, kiehl's, skin care, mask

It’s made with Aloe Vera and Oatmeal which helps to sooth and smooth the skin. The White Clay is meant to draw out impurities like dirt and oil, and clear the skin of toxins.

Kiehl’s website states that “Amazonian Clay helps purify and detoxify skin. This clay is known to remove bacteria, toxins, excess oil and dead cells that can clog skin and result in enlarged pores.”

Personally I believe it really works. After just one use the few pimples that I had on the surface of my skin had already lessened in redness and cleared the very next day! At this stage in my life this masque has made the top of my list. If you suffer from acne, breakouts, or oily skin I recommend you try this out twice a week and see how it can help you.

Best Way To Treat A Sunburn

We’ve all been there: you forgot to reapply sunscreen, or you forgot it altogether. You get up the next morning and your skin has never been more red and is starting to blister. The thought of having to wear a shirt that will touch your skin makes you cringe. So what’s the best way to quickly get rid of it? You can start by following these steps, and then making sure that you don’t make the same mistake twice.

Step 1:

Take a cool bath. Wash your skin with just water, and avoid soaps and washes. Your skin is super delicate right now and using anything too harsh can cause irritation or discomfort. The cool water will feel good on your radiating skin.

Step 2:

Try a cold compress. After the cool bath you will want to continue to sooth your skin with something cold. It will help constrict the blood vessels and will help with swelling. Anything to absorb the heat from your skin will make you feel much better.

Step 3:

Mix real vitamin E with fresh aloe from a plant and apply to your skin at bedtime. If you don’t have an aloe plant then a 100% pure aloe gel will work just fine. To find a vitamin E that’s pure, find it in capsule form. Use a needle to prick a hole in the capsule and squeeze it out onto your finger. It’s going to feel sticky and thick, but I promise it will make all the difference. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that is healing to the skin, and aloe vera aids the skin in healing burns. Mixed together you can’t go wrong.

Step 4:

In the mornings, apply a moisturizer to the entire affected area. You don’t want your sunburn to get dry. It would just be a big itchy mess, and everyone knows you don’t scratch a sunburn…I recommend using Acure calming body lotion. If you stash it in the refrigerator it will add some relief to the burn. Remember not to peel off the peeling skin. Just let nature do it’s thing. It’s going to take a good few months for your skin to return to normal, so make sure you continue to moisturize daily to help the process along faster.

I think it goes without saying to try to remember your sunscreen next time, and reapply, reapply, reapply!

Aveda Tulāsara Radiant Awakening Ritual Review

I haven’t revisited my Aveda Skin Care Series in awhile so I’ll pick back up with a fairly new product, the tulāsara radiant oleation oil. Using the oil with the facial dry brush you form the Radiant Awakening Ritual. This ritual is supposed to be performed every morning before you put makeup on, and it takes approximately 7 minutes. Now that can be tricky for some people. I know that I don’t have an extra 7 minutes every morning to spend on my skin care routine, but IF you do, it’s worth it. If you can’t perform the ritual every morning, try for at least twice a week. Some is better than none.

aveda skin care, tulasara, facial brush, exfoliant, radiant skin

The goal of this ritual is to brighten up your complexion and to exfoliate off dead skin cells to help with cellular turnover, leaving your skin smooth and glowing.

The Ritual

facial brush, aveda, aveda skin care, skin care, exfoliation

Step 1: Begin by cleansing and then drying your skin. You want to make sure your skin is clean when you begin the exfoliation process.

Step 2: Using the dry facial brush, exfoliate by moving the brush in small circular motions over your face and neck. This should take about 1 minute.

Step 3: Massage in the tulāsara oleation oil with your fingertips, moving in small circles, really working it into the skin. This should also take about 1 minute.

Step 4: Let the oil soak into your skin for the next 4 minutes. Then cleanse your skin to remove the oil, and continue with your normal skin care routine.

Is It Worth the Money?

So, the starter kit with the facial brush and the radiant oleation oil retails for $89. That should last you at least 3-4 months, because a little bit goes a long way with this stuff. With that being said, I think it is worth the money. Think of it this way, it’s just like as if you were buying a smaller and cheaper product every month around the price of $22-30. Instead of having to buy this monthly, it will last you around 4 months. If you take good care of your brush and wash it bi-weekly with a gentle soap, then you shouldn’t have to buy another brush for a long time.

I have used the oleation oil and brush on my clients at Ihloff Salon and Day Spa, and I can honestly say I’ve been able to see a noticeable difference in their skin after performing this ritual on them. It sloughs off the dull skin and leaves your skin looking bright. It’s 100% naturally derived oil, and it’s non-acnegenic so it’s good for all skin types! If you’d like to try it out before you buy it, come see me for a facial. I can show you your skin before I use it, so you can see for yourself the benefits it brings.

Clear Proof Deep-Cleansing Charcoal Mask Review

My cousin who is a Mary Kay consultant gave me a sample of this charcoal mask to try and I’m thinking it’s time to get some more samples of her products! The Clear Proof Deep-Cleansing Charcoal Mask is the very first Mary Kay product I’ve tried and so far I like what I see.

charcoal mask, mary kay, skin care

•It was easy enough to apply. It had a nice scent of rosemary and peppermint, which I didn’t expect at all. AND my skin feels super smooth now.

•I noticed that it soaked up all of the oil from my skin, which is nice because I’m extra oily this time of year.

•My skin was a little blotchy before I used it and now my skin tone looks more even and bright. I definitely see glowing skin after just the one use!

no makeup selfie, mary kary, charcoal mask, skin care

•I’d recommend using it twice a week for anyone with acne issues, anyone with oily skin, or anyone with clogged pores. It’s supposed to be really good at drawing impurities out of your skin and leaving your pores clean and clear.

I have only tried one other charcoal mask, and I can definitely say this Mary Kay one is the better pick. Plus it’s on the cheaper end of skin care at only $24! Mary Kay is upping their game lately and I like it!

If you’d like to try a sample of the Clear Proof Deep-Cleansing Charcoal Mask you can contact my cousin, Audrey. She can answer all your questions! Reach her on the Mary Kay website under independent consultant Audrey Parnell, or shoot her a message at (405) 567-9070.

Beauty Sleep

Getting a good night’s sleep has never been more important to me than it is now. Two kids under the age of three, a dog that thinks he’s a child, and working part-time can take a toll on a girl, so getting adequate sleep is necessary. Not just to maintain my sanity, but sleep is also important for my skin. When you sleep your skin repairs itself and works to replenish nutrients to give you a healthy complexion. I know that I need all the beauty sleep I can get, so I like to follow a nightly routine that relaxes me and gets my body ready for rest.

crane and canopy, bed set

I start with my nightly skin care routine. I remove all of my makeup from the day, and then make sure to apply a vitamin c serum and a light moisturizer. Afterwards I like to get into my most comfortable pajamas and snuggle into my soft sheets with a good book. I’m not kidding when I say that my bed is like sleeping on a cloud. It’s my favorite place in my whole house. I have amazingly soft sheets, a foam mattress that adjusts to my body, and a goose down pillow that I can’t live without.

crane and canopy, sheets

crane and canopy, pillows

In my opinion, I believe that making your bedroom a place that you can truly relax in makes all the difference in how quickly you’re able to shut your brain off and fall into a good sleep. Your room is your own little slice of paradise. It’s a place you should just be able to grab a glass of wine, your favorite throw, snuggle in with Netflix for the night, and then drift into a good sleep.

crane and canopy, throw blanket

Poor sleep can actually lead to skin issues. Especially for people who struggle with stress-related issues like acne or psoriasis. Like I said before, when you sleep that’s when your skin can work on repairing any damage, and when you’re deprived of sleep or simply just not getting enough of the deep sleep that your body requires, it causes the release of stress hormones. Therefore causing stress-related skin issues to flair up. Without the deeper stages of sleep your body can’t rebalance hydration, which causes your skin to age faster.

Following a nightly routine is a proven way to help you fall asleep quicker, and get a better night of sleep. So do yourself a favor and start a bedtime routine. Do anything that you enjoy and that would help you relax and prepare your body for rest. Your skin will thank you.

0-3 Month Baby Faves

As Ellis gets older we continue to try more and more things to find what works best and what he likes. (Okay, mostly what MOMMY likes…) And honestly I have no idea how he’s already 12 weeks old already, but here we are- him growing out of his 0-3 month clothes. Now as we are moving out of this stage I wanted to share what made the top of my list.

  1. Cat and Jack Sleep and Play outfits – seriously genius pajamas for babies! Finally someone figured out that the zipper should start at the top! It makes diaper changes much easier.

cat and jack, sleeper, baby clothes, target

2. Dove Baby Lotion– It smells heavenly, and helped majorly with cradle cap! It’s a thicker lotion, and a little bit goes a long way. Highly recommend, especially for babies who have flaky skin.

3. Nose Frida– I know it seems weird and almost gross to suck snot out of your baby’s nose through a tube, but once you try it you love it! There’s a filter that’s between your mouth and their nose, so no need to worry about a gross surprise. It works like a charm! Ellis had a tiny cold when he was about 8 weeks old, and I used it every time he sounded congested and every single time it unclogged his nose! Go out and buy one right now! You’ll thank me later.

4. Little Remedies Nasal Spray– This saline spray goes hand-in-hand with the Nose Frida I was just talking about. Do a light spray up their nose before you use the Nose Frida. It really helps loosen up the mucous clogging their little nose passages. Grab some of this while you’re at it!

5. Honest Diapers– I am not a picky mom when it comes to diapers. Seriously, I use them all. Every baby is different, too, so you never know which brand will work best until you try them all. For this stage in Ellis’s life, I love the Honest brand diapers. It’s the only diaper that he hasn’t had leakage with so far. They don’t have the strip at the front that tells you if they’re wet, but make up for that with their super cute designs. Plus there’s the benefit of them being completely clear of any chemicals and are supposed to be great for babies with sensitive skin.

6. Sophie the Giraffe– Of course they’re too little to actually play with toys at this stage, but I’ve been holding it in Ellis’s hands to show him how to bring it to his mouth. He also loves when it gives him kisses (and what mom could get enough of hearing those little baby giggles?!). The Sophie toy is a very popular teething toy and with good reason. The rubber is soft enough to feel good on their gums, but isn’t too flimsy where you should worry about them biting pieces off. (At least my daughter never did with her Sophie.) Very cute for girls or boys, and it’s durable so it lasts the whole time they’re teething.

7. Candy Kirby Designs Knotted Gown– I just started using this a few weeks ago, because it’s size 3-6 month and it swallowed E until recently. I love this gown! There’s a large array of color options, but we got the olive colored gown as a gift! I love it so much, I plan to get several more for him to grow into! It’s so convenient because when you’re changing their diaper, all you have to do is untie a knot. The material is super soft, and it’s a little stretchy so it can grow a little with them. Plus they’re amazingly cute.

8. California Baby Shampoo and Body Wash– I’ve been using this on E since his first bath. It contains only naturally-derived cleansing ingredients so it’s super safe to use on your little babe. It’s formulated for sensitive skin so you don’t have to worry that your little one might have a reaction to it. (Also on my Baby Picks of 2016 List! Click link to see the full list.)

9. Natursutten Pacifier– It’s made from natural rubber and comes in 3 different sizes. We are a paci family. I have used them for both of my kids, but I just now discovered the Natursutten paci! I want to save you the money you’d spend on trying out 10 different types of pacifiers and just tell you to get this one first.

10. That’s Not My Fox book- I come from a family of readers, so it’s been important to me to read my babies lots of books! It not only helps them develop a wide vocabulary, but it also helps them understand how to speak properly from a very young age! I have Ellis’s room done in woodland animals (lots of foxes), so I love to display this book on his shelf. It’s a super cute touch-and-feel book, and there’s more books just like it with different animals.

Reflection

With Mother’s Day just passing, it made me think of just how amazing women are. We are able to carry a baby for 9 months, birth that child, and are able to bounce back (after some time, of course).

Being a mom of two, I have many good days but I also have my bad days. The days when I look at my stretch marks and want to cry. The days when I get more pimples from my crazy hormones and get so frustrated. As a woman, one of the hardest things we could ever do is go through a pregnancy. It brings with it lots of physical and emotional changes, good and bad! Don’t get me wrong, I loved being pregnant. I’ll always think of it as one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever experienced, but I do still struggle with certain aspects of postpartum.

The fact that it takes so long to fully recover has been a hard thing for me. I mean, I HEALED crazy fast this time around, but I’m still dealing with hormone ups and downs, which impact me emotionally and physically. They say that it takes 9 months to complete a pregnancy, so it will take about that long to feel normal again. I am lucky that I have so much support, especially from my older sister (also a mother). She tells me all of the time, “show yourself some grace” and I can’t tell you how much that has helped me! Why do we live in a society that still expects women to be normal after just a few weeks or months after giving birth? It’s a very unrealistic expectation, and we shouldn’t be putting that kind of pressure on new moms.

We need to start accepting that it’s a slow healing process. The sooner that we can accept that, the sooner we can start loving ourselves more. It doesn’t matter to our babies if we have an extra 10 pounds that we can’t get rid of. It doesn’t matter to our babies if we have stretch marks, or c-section scars, or flabby arms. Those things don’t mean that we aren’t still beautiful.

I want my daughter to grow up with healthy expectations and that starts with me. I don’t want her to grow up hearing me always talk about how much I hate my nose, or how pale I am, or how much weight I need to lose. I want her to want to be confident! I want her to focus on being healthy and active. So I’m going to show her how to love herself by loving myself. We shouldn’t spend our lives looking down at all of the things we wish we could change because then we will miss seeing all of the beauty around us. And if you ever need a reminder at just how amazing you are, look down at those precious babies of yours and remember that you made them.

Show yourself some grace.

Root Cover Up

L’OREAL Paris’ Root Cover Up comes in 8 different color options, but I use Dark Brown.

My new favorite hair product can be found here!

It’s seriously been a life saver these past 12 weeks when I haven’t been able to find much time to make it to the salon to cover my roots. Trust me, they’re bad- but when I use this you can’t tell! It takes 10 seconds to apply, it blends amazingly, and it lasts several days between hair washes. A little bit goes a long way, too. I’ve only purchased one bottle so far and it’s not empty yet. Highly recommend!

Using the Best Cleanser For Your Skin

When I do my skin consultations I always ask my clients what their home care regimen is like, and 50% of the time the person is using the wrong type of cleanser for their skin.  Using the correct type of cleanser can make a world of difference!

Oily/Acne Skin Type

If you are someone who has overactive oil glands it can be very frustrating trying to get that under control. One of the easiest solutions can be to change up your cleanser. The best cleansers for you would be a gel or foaming cleanser. They’re the best at drying out your skin and soaking up that excess oil.

If you have acne prone skin, using a gel or a foaming cleanser will dry out those pimples and help them clear up faster. If the cleanser contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide that’s even better for your acne. They’ll kill the trapped bacteria in your pores and will help reduce inflammation.

Cystic acne is a different story. If you suffer from this condition it’s important for you to see a dermatologist who can prescribe medicated skin care or creams that will assist in clearing up your skin. You can never go wrong with a sensitive cleanser without added fragrances, though. Stay clear of anything abrasive that could break open the pustules and spread the bacteria. That will only make things worse!

Dry Skin

Dry skin isn’t fun, either. It can be itchy, flaky and rough, causing your makeup to go on unevenly. For you it’s important to use a cleanser that is creamy or milky. You want to avoid using anything that could dry your skin out more, so that means no exfoliating cleansers, scrubs, or gels and foams.

Making sure you’re drinking lots of water is very beneficial, too. It will hydrate your skin from the inside-out.

Sensitive Skin

If you have sensitive skin then you understand how important it is to use the correct skin care for your skin type. You can’t use just anything. You have to look for certain ingredients, and have to avoid certain things that could cause a negative reaction. The best thing for someone with sensitivities is to use a milky cleanser, with no fragrances. Keep it as plain as possible.

If you have rosacea that you can’t get under control, then make sure you see a dermatologist who can prescribe a cleanser to even out your complexion and help get rid of the redness and bumps.

Aging Skin

If you’re starting to notice fine lines and wrinkles then it may be time to switch to a cleanser specifically to help reverse the aging process. Usually those cleansers are creamy or milky, and have ingredients like retinol, Vitamin C or other antioxidants, or alpha hydroxy acids.

For you it’s important to treat your skin very delicately. Don’t stretch the skin, and be very gentle when removing any eye makeup to avoid damaging the elasticity in your skin. Drink lots of water to help flush out toxins and to hydrate your skin from the inside-out.

See A Professional

If you haven’t found something that works for you yet, you can always go see a professional. Schedule a facial that will include a skin consultation and make sure you express your concerns with your esthetician. They’d be happy to give you some recommendations and work with you to find the right cleanser for your skin.

*I begin taking clients again on May 12, so if you’re in the Tulsa area and need some assistance then come visit me at Ihloff Salon and Day Spa. I’d be happy to evaluate your skin and get you started on a new regimen.

2 Month Update

Well, those two months snuck up on me quick!

Ellis is pretty amazing. I mean, LOOK AT HIM.

Photo Apr 20, 1 48 29 PM (1).jpg

He sleeps like a champ, only waking up one time throughout the night.

He eats for a long time, which in turn makes him gain some good weight. My big boy is already 11.5 lbs!

Ellis is an excellent cuddler! Seriously, he could cuddle all day long.  He also loves looking at fans, listening to music, batting at his toys, eating, and watching his crazy sister run around!

Photo Apr 25, 3 00 59 PM.jpg

Emery loves him and thinks she is his second mommy. She’s always wanting to hold him, and is right there when he cries to give him his paci. She loves for Mommy and Daddy to read them books together, and HAS to be the helper for every. Single. Diaper change.

Photo Apr 25, 6 18 07 PM.jpg

These past two months have been so much easier than I anticipated. Ellis is such an easy-going little baby! I thought the transition would be super rough the first few months, but he has made this experience so manageable.

Photo Apr 15, 12 22 09 PM Photo Apr 11, 2 50 19 PM

We are all so crazy about him! Even Muffie (our cute fur baby) adores him. He definitely completes our awesome little family. Happy 2 months, Ellis Emel!
