What Is Oil Cleansing?
I had heard about oil cleansing for years but had never tried it until recently. For those of you who don’t know what oil cleansing is, it’s using an oil (like coconut oil, argan oil, castor oil, extra virgin olive oil, or shea oil) to clean your face instead of using a cleanser. (I have been using Josie Maran’s Argan Oil I got at Sephora. I’ve also tried coconut oil in the past. Read more about ways you can use coconut oil in your beauty routine here.) Oils tend to be very mild so using them on your face doesn’t usually cause you to break out. In fact, they have some antioxidants and vitamins in them that will dissolve built up dirt and oil in your pores and will leave your skin hydrated and soft. They will pull excess oil out of your skin instead of using a water-based cleanser which could push excess oil farther into your skin. (Oil and water don’t mix.)
Skin Types That Will Benefit From It
Oil cleansing can be beneficial for any skin type, as long as you’re not allergic to the oil that you’re using. Like any other new product you try, you can try a test patch on a small area on your face to see if you’ll have a reaction.
Certain oils work better for someone with dry skin as opposed to someone with acne-prone skin. If you have dry skin you can try using coconut oil, shea oil, or the argan oil. For oily and acne-prone skin you can try extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, or castor oil. Feel free to use an essential oil with your base oil, just make sure you know how much to use and which ones are safe to apply to the face.
How To Oil Cleanse
It’s a good idea to cleanse after a hot shower, since the steam will open up your pores. On a morning or evening when that’s not possible, just dab your skin with a warm/hot wash cloth for about 30 seconds before applying your oil.
(Don’t mind my new “three weeks postpartum” dark circles. I haven’t started using an eye cream yet.)
Apply the oil with clean fingertips and work it into your skin in small circular motions. Do this for about a minute and then remove the oil using a soft warm/hot wash cloth.
Don’t wipe too vigorously, and avoid wiping and stretching your skin. That can cause the breakdown of collagen and elastin and will cause wrinkles to appear prematurely.
As with any cleanser, follow up with a light moisturizer if you need additional hydration, and a sunscreen for daytime. I finish with Josie Maran’s Surreal Skin Argan Finishing Balm that I recieved in my Sephora Play! box. (Pictured above.)
Since starting oil cleansing two weeks ago I have noticed a more even skin tone and a brighter complexion. My skin is nowhere near perfect after going through all of these hormonal changes post-pregnancy, but I can say that oil cleansing has definitely been a step in the right direction.
